Position Description
Assists in providing leadership and direction for an assigned area within the athletic department. Responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of the department. Responsible for employees in the assigned area.
Major/Essential Functions
The Assistant Athletics Director - Strength & Conditioning is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the strength and conditioning program for the athletic department. This position will ensure all strength, conditioning, and training programs for student-athletes across all sports are in accordance with NCAA and industry standards and are appropriately documented while directly serving as the primary strength coach for one designated team. The role ensures compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations and fosters a culture of excellence, safety, and development for student-athletes.
- Oversee the strategic planning, development, and administration of the strength and conditioning program for all sports, including ongoing communication with head coaches to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
- Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate strength & conditioning staff, including assistant strength coaches, student assistants, and interns.
- Design and implement sport-specific strength and conditioning programs in compliance with NCAA Inter-association safety guidelines to enhance athletic performance, prevent injuries, and promote overall student-athlete wellness.
- Serve as the primary strength & conditioning coach for one sport, providing individualized programming and training.
- Collaborate with sport coaches, athletic trainers, and medical personnel to develop integrated performance enhancement and injury prevention strategies.
- Manage the scheduling and daily operations of weight rooms and training facilities.
- Ensure that all strength and conditioning activities comply with NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations, as well as health and safety standards.
- Conduct an annual review of NCAA Inter-association Guidelines related to Strength and conditioning to ensure compliance.
- Annually evaluate and collaborate with the health and wellness staff on all current and any new sport science initiatives and use of biometric data.
- Responsible for biometric data education and student-athlete consent thru Teamworks.
- Oversee and document coach and student-athlete strength and conditioning education plan as required by NCAA.
- Develop and monitor budgets related to strength and conditioning equipment, staffing, and resources.
- Ensure strength coaches are appropriately certified per NCAA and athletic department policies, including but not limited to first aid, CPR/AED, strength coach standards, and maintain documentation of all certifications.
- Stay up to date on current trends, research, and innovations in strength & conditioning to enhance program effectiveness.
- Promote a motivating and team-oriented environment that supports student-athlete development and success.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Three (3) years experience in an intercollegiate athletics department or other work experience that would demonstrate the necessary background and knowledge. Must have a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field.
- Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA or Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the CSCCa.
- Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to strength & conditioning.
- Experience supervising strength & conditioning staff.
- Experience working with multiple student-athletes at the collegiate level.
